However, it has a significant special usage, particularly in the third person singular (treba), where it can function impersonally. In this impersonal construction, the entity experiencing the need is expressed in the dative case, and the thing being needed is often in the nominative case or followed by an infinitive. For example, 'Treba mi kava' (I need coffee, literally 'Coffee is necessary to me') or 'Treba ići' (It is necessary to go / One needs to go). While 'Ja trebam kavu' (I need coffee) is also correct and common, the impersonal 'treba mi' construction is very frequent in daily speech.
